Back at it
I apologize for my absence. It’s been a surreal few months— some life-changing events in my neck of the woods. Summer was a blur.
Through it all, our family has continued to be incredibly blessed. We’ve been uplifted by the kindness of people placed in our path, by dear friends, and most of all, by one another. Miracles and blessings, both large and small, have washed ashore like waves—bringing grace that has made the challenges feel easier.
And we’ve had so many blessings: big birthdays (and government insurance!), birds nesting in the backyard, roses and chrysanthemums in bloom, sunny days, visits from our favorite family of blue jays, flowers and notes left on the front porch, walks with the dogs around the neighborhood, stacks of books to read, family time at the beach, a choir retreat at St. Andrew’s Abbey, and so much more.
The final words on this stage we’re passing through? "All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.” (Mother Julian of Norwich - my favorite optimist.)
Fall is bringing changes. School is back in session and our neighborhood is quieter in the day. Evening comes earlier and the sunsets are muted (but glorious). A few nights ago, Natalie and I were summoned outside by a pair of Great Horned owls, who were calling to one another (and us!). It was amazing and we followed them from tree to tree, house to house. Our neighbor, a dear, dear friend, has decided to sell her family’s home and move to another state. We’ve been neighbors for 36 years. When I saw the “Coming Soon” sign come up a couple of weeks ago, tears came to my eyes. Good neighbors are so important, and I am hoping that the next residents are as wonderful as the the current occupant.
I’m looking forward to more structure in this season, which is one of my favorites for creative work and planning. I’m close to completing edits on the second draft of my novel and back to my weekly virtual writing session with a dear friend. I’ll soon be back to working with Vera at her ceramics studio. I’m rehearsing Messiah for the singalong being organized by St. Paul’s in December (message me for ticket info if you’re in the #805), and participating in weekly choir rehearsals and church services. These activities always provide moments of joy, accomplishment, and focus.
Thank you for reading. I’m grateful to be back writing and moving forward—one day, one blessing at a time.
